As someone who was deeply embedded in the alternative scene from the 90s through the noughties, my heart has always aligned with those who defy the ordinary and think outside the box. This passion was re-ignited and I got the same surge of excitement at the Quirky Wedding Fayre held at Battleswick Farm in Essex!
Stepping Away from Tradition
We live in a wonderful era where love and marriage are truly for everyone, a fact that deserves celebration. However, until recently, weddings have been largely tailored for traditional couples keeping with the conventional norms. Traditional weddings were often indistinguishable from one another, appeasing the village elders with age-old customs. But today, there’s a rising tide of modern couples eager to nudge, kick and trample these fusty boundaries.
Having a wedding day tailored you and your partner should be a no-brainer. The day should be enjoyable and look to celebrate what really matters, the love between you and your partner. If that love is imperfect, fun and unique, then the celebrations should reflect that.
Who are these Quirky Couples?

What is the Quirky Wedding Fayre?
The Quirky Wedding Fayre in Essex buzzed with energy and excitement among exhibitors and visitors alike. A quiet hour accommodated those with sensory sensitivities, which meant that the event was fully inclusive- with everyone welcome, considered and celebrated.
Organised by the colourful Jodie from Ella Bella Events, each stand at the fayre was a sight to behold, manned by friendly suppliers brimming with odd-ball enthusiasm. Highlights of the day included a saxophonist playing 90s club tunes and the brilliant drag queen celebrant, Maria Hertz. The entire event felt more like a cool festival than a formal wedding fair.
Vibrancy and excitement permeated every stand. Couples wore huge smiles and exhibited genuine enthusiasm for our work. By following their own paths, they were immediately cutting out the stress of adhering to outdated expectations.
Embracing Colourful Wedding Dresses
I felt right at home with my colourful wedding dresses despite wondering at the White Gallery whether I ought to make more white gowns. I’ve since regrounded myself. The world has millions of white wedding dresses for traditional brides to choose from. I am fascinated by quirky brides. Whatever your quirk is, from vibrant colours through to gothic style and everywhere in between and once again, out of that box too. There is no box! Just like the brides opting for something different, I felt proud to show off my unique designs and celebrate the un-ordinary.
Upcoming Quirky Events
Quirky Fayres are happening across the UK and I’ll be at the one in Buckinghamshire in Jan 2025.
For those drawn to the darker side, I’ll be showcasing a different collection of gowns at the Gothic Luxe Wedding Fair in York in September. This event is more geared towards the dark, gothic and metal loving couples.
